Retire in a College Town – Oxford, Mississippi

Oxford, Mississippi has received quite a bit of favorable publicity in recent years as a retirement destination for baby boomers.  Mrs. GoTo and I have been there a couple of times and enjoyed it.  Oxford is the home of the University of Mississippi.  (Our third son is a student at Mississippi State University, the arch-rival of Ole Miss in Starkville.)

From what I can tell, both Oxford and the university have embraced the concept of being a retirement destination.  In fact, they even have a retirement program section on their website.  The university has a “Communiversity”  community outreach program that offers educational and cultural opportunities for retirees.

Here is video I found that talks specifically about Oxford as a retirement destination for baby boomers:

Mississippi itself is attractive to retirees because of its low taxes.  Retirees pay no income taxes on their retirement income.  Also, seniors over 65 are exempt from property taxes on the first $75,000 of property valuation.

Oxford is a small town (13,000 residents) but Memphis is less than a 90 minute drive.

Here are more facts and figures about Oxford.
