My wife and I have looked into Senior communities with HOA fees. We are now about 70% against them. We have looked into renting a home or condo, nothing to show for our money with time. We are now looking into independent living that also offers assisted living. Does anyone have any pros of cons on independent living complexes that we buy in to?

Being at retirement age and with no retirement fund to fall back on, there is no question that I will have to rent rather than own. The equity in my home is my retirement income. To make matters worse, I haven't paid into Social Security for the last 20 years, so my SS benefit will be minimal which means that I will probably looking at rent controlled housing as well. Even if I weren't in this situation, I would want the flexibility that renting affords after retirement. I may not want to stay in any one place more than a few years. Owning would not allow for that, and would also be much more costly in the long run.
