Baby Boomer Downsizing – Tell Your Story

downsizingIf you are a baby boomer and haven’t thought about downsizing your life, you are likely in the minority. Unless you are abundantly wealthy or are already living the simpler lifestyle of an empty nester, downsizing should be on your retirement planning agenda. It’s certainly on ours.

To clarify, when I speak of downsizing and baby boomers, I’m referring to selling the large family home and moving into something that is more appropriate to the needs of older adults who have finished raising their children. We want to spend less of our precious time and money maintaining the place in which we live. For some, this could include a complete relocation to an area having a lower cost of living. There are a number of financial reasons to downsize. In some states, property taxes alone can drive such a decision.

If you are – or want to be – on the downsizing path, are you willing to share your story with others? If so, I have a request. A writer for a prominent newspaper is working on a story about downsizing. He has interviewed me and is looking for others who are thinking about this topic. Recent economic events may have affected you such that downsizing to save money has become important. He wants to talk to you and perhaps include a little of your downsizing thoughts or story in his article.

Thanks.

My husband and I have been investing for retirement for sometime and have enjoyed living in a nice size home. Recently we found an adorable 105 year old bungalow we are spending weekends and evenings renovating together. We are having so much fun and have put a lot of our personality and likes in to the house. The location is in a beautiful, historical part of town and we have grown to enjoy being there. Now we are contemplating selling our beautiful home and moving into this little charmer! No house payment, much lower property taxes and since we have replumbed, rewired and put in new central air and heat, utilities could drop considerably as well. Now I have to figure out which pieces of my furniture I can live without!!!! We are excited about this new chapter in our life and look forward to more financial freedom to invest and enjoy!
