Good points. I would add "do more of your hobby." Most everyone has something they enjoy doing. I guess you might be in trouble if your hobby is golfing. Maybe spend a couple days at the driving range instead of the course.
Hobbies have different price tags.

My husband and I, while not officially retired, have been out of work for several months and have used these months as practice for retirement with respect to our finances and our activities.

Your comments are spot on. We have been cooking more at home, which saves and makes for healthier choices. And for the first time I can tell you the price of a pound of bananas, since I bake more often. On a recent trip to Washington State, both my husband and my friend got a kick out of my excitement at finding bananas for 49 cents a pound instead of the 79 cents a pound I pay in California! It still makes for a good laugh on occasion.

You also mention finding free entertainment. Our new favorite place is our public library. I have always spent a fortune on books, but now I pride myself on finding what I need at our library, both books and movies.

I have also had a chance to try out 3 volunteer groups before settling on one that seems a good fit for me.

Like many people who found themselves suddenly out of a job, or in different financial circumstances, we have made some changes and learned new ways of doing things. Those new ways will stick with us, I am sure, whether we go back into the workforce or just say, "The heck with it" and enjoy what I call our "accidental retirement."
