AARP Event Videolog – Day 1

The AARP social media moguls turned me loose at Orlando@50+ with a new video camera. That may have been a mistake. My eye and camera were drawn to the stranger aspects of attending my first AARP member event. Read more

Dave Barry – Still Funny After All These Years

September 30, 2010 by

The AARP Orlando@50+ event has provided me two more firsts: (1) An in-person performance by humorist Dave Barry (joined by 4500 other boomers and retirees) and (2) my first press conference, also with Mr. Barry. If you are not a Barry fan, you should be. Lucky for you it’s not too late. He is still the funniest writer (and now speaker) I know. Read more

The Hard Truth About Shifting into a 50+ New Career

September 30, 2010 by

I just finished listening to Brent Rasmussen, President of CareerBuilder.com tell a room full of boomers how to “shift into a new career.” A show of hands quickly indicated that many of the attendees wanted a job – any job. Another 1/3 were working, unhappy, and looking. So the focus of the session was really about how someone in our age group can find a job. Read more

I just returned from our first series of AARP Orlando@50+ outings. The first was a short visit to Universal Studios/Citywalk. Although billed as a “Meet and Greet”, all I had time to “greet” after navigating the transportation issues was a $5.50 Budweiser.   Read more

I’ve arrived in Orlando, checked in at the hotel, and met my friendly, youthful social media handlers from the AARP. They were kind and wily enough to score us passes to the Meet and Greet event at Universal Studios tonight. I won’t be there long but I feel compelled to check it out. Read more

I’m leaving Wednesday with Mrs. P to join thousands of other baby boomers and retirees at the AARP Orlando 50+ National Member Event. As one of the three official guest bloggers for the event, you will be seeing at least two posts each day (September 29-October 2) from me.  I will try to make them interesting and informative.  I hope to get a few interviews as well, as the AARP is granting me some media credentials. Does that mean I can get away with some even stronger opinions without fear of retaliation? Read more

After reading this post, many of you will probably think I obsess about the personal finance component of our retirement planning. You are probably right. The fact that I blog about it may be evidence enough! Either way, I thought I would share what I typically do each day within our personal finance domain. It helps me. Maybe it will help some of you to read about what I do, how I do it and why I do it. Read more

In recent months the battle cry against Social Security has been “raise the retirement age.” As baby boomers, we don’t like to hear that. For most of us, working until age 70 is not appealing. How about a different view: lowering the retirement age. Read more

Retirement Boot Camps and Other Boomer Readings

The New York Times recently ran a piece on retirement boot camps. The author wrote about folks who had attended a retirement workshop at UNC Asheville.  I actually wrote about the University of North Carolina Center for Creative Retirement some time ago.
